This relationship is referred to in the literature as constructive alignment. “Constructive alignment is an outcomes-based approach to teaching in which the learning outcomes that students are intended to achieve are defined before teaching takes place. Teaching and assessment methods are then designed to best achieve those outcomes and to assess the standard at which they have been achieved (Biggs, 2014).” In principle, constructive alignment describes the relationship between three elements. The intentions of the teacher expressed as learning outcomes (what the teacher intends the students will be able to do because of their learning). Constructive alignment can be used for individual courses, for degree programmes, and at the institutional level, for aligning all teaching to graduate attributes. Constructive alignment is an example of outcomes-based education (OBE).
