Ginsberg’s role in the Beat Generation and subsequently in the counterculture of the 60s and 70s was incomperable. His consistently confessional and political poetry will stand among the best of the 20th C. I think it really is Beatnik Poetry; I am reminded of Kerouac fast paced, edgy, sometimes satire and sometimes sarcastic. Lots of personal reflections, honest and often terse. Good observations and capture of first impressions of what the author sees, feels and thinks. Spontaneous and then moving on to the next impression.
The night is well recounted early in Jack Kerouac’s novel The Dharma Bums. After the Gallery Six reading, The Beat Movement became a national literary movement. Beat poetry probably begins with the free verse poetry of the King James Bible, channeled through John Milton and the Romantics, particularly W illiam Blake, but also John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. After Blake, the primary mentor of the Beat poets was Walt Whitman, followed by Allen Ginsberg. The Beat poets were a group of friends living in New York City in the decade following World War II who, through their collaborations, experiments with poetry rhythms, and questioning of the status quo, forever altered the relationship of poetry to popular culture. In 1959, Fred McDarrah started a "Rent-a-Beatnik" service in New York, taking out ads in The Village Voice and sending Ted Joans and friends out on calls to read poetry. "Beatniks" appeared in many cartoons, movies, and TV shows of the time, perhaps the most famous being the character Maynard G. Krebs in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959–1963).
