He is known for surviving an accident in 1978, when a high energy pro Well, if you’re Anatoli Bugorski, you go on to finish your PhD. Bugorski is the only person known to have been exposed to a particle accelerator beam, the result of an accident that occurred while he was working at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Russia. For Bugorski, particularly vulnerable tissues, such as bone marrow and the gastrointestinal track, might have been largely spared. But where the beam shot through Bugorski’s head, it deposited an obscene amount of radiation energy, hundreds of times greater than a lethal dose. Yet, in spite of any prediction, Burgoski did not die.

He was working with the Soviet Particle accelerator, The Synchrotron U-70. What happened to Anatoli Bugorski, the only person known to have been exposed to a particle accelerator beam? Anatoli Bugorski worked as a researcher at the institute for high-energy physics in protvino while checking a malfunctioning piece of equipment a beam from the largest Soviet particle accelerator measured at about 200,000 rads went straight through his head but Bugorski’s face swelled up beyond recognition and started peeling off the beam burned through parts of his face his bone and the brain tissue underneath astonishingly although only 500 rads would normally be enough to kill a person Bugorski might have experienced the full wrath of a beam with more than 300 times this much energy, 76 billion electron volts. Proton radiation is a rare beast indeed.
